Privacy Policy
GeoGuesser is an online geography guessing game available at https://geoguesser.cc/. The operator and data controller is Békési Bálint, a private individual based in Hungary. For privacy questions, contact abbalint@gmail.com.
1. Information processed
- Guest sessions: a randomly generated guest identity, session cookie and public nickname, if enabled by the deployed game version.
- Gameplay: guesses, match results, scores, wins, losses and leaderboard statistics. A guess is a location chosen in the game and is not necessarily the player's real-world location.
- Technical and security information: IP address, request times, browser/user-agent details and error logs, depending on hosting and application logging configuration.
- Connected accounts (planned): when Google or Facebook login becomes available, a provider-specific account identifier and any profile fields disclosed in the login flow, such as name or email. GeoGuesser does not request the provider account password. Provider names and photos are not automatically made public.
- Support requests: information you choose to send in an email.
2. Purposes and legal bases
We process information to provide gameplay and requested account functionality, retain match results, operate leaderboards, maintain security, investigate abuse, and respond to messages. Depending on the specific activity, GDPR legal bases may include performance of a contract (Article 6(1)(b)), legitimate interests in operating and securing the service (Article 6(1)(f)), and consent for optional tracking or advertising where required (Article 6(1)(a)). The correct legal basis must be confirmed for each feature before launch.
3. Public profile information
Other players may see your GeoGuesser nickname, score, ranking, and game statistics. Do not include personal information in your nickname. Email addresses, authentication provider identifiers and session tokens are not intended to be public. Usernames may be moderated for abuse.
4. Cookies and local storage
Essential session cookies may be used to maintain guest or signed-in identities and security. Google Maps/Street View and, when enabled, advertising providers may use cookies, local storage or similar technologies. Optional advertising technologies will require a suitable notice and consent controls where legally required. Users should be able to revisit privacy choices after making them. Before publication, confirm cookie names, purposes, providers, expiry periods, and whether each cookie is essential.
5. Google Maps and Street View (currently used)
GeoGuesser uses Google Maps and Street View. When these features load, Google may receive technical information, including your IP address and interaction data, under Google's policies. See Google Privacy Policy and Google Maps Terms.
6. Google and Facebook sign-in (planned)
If social sign-in is enabled, Google or Meta authenticates you and sends GeoGuesser information allowed by the permissions shown to you. We intend to use the provider's stable user identifier to associate your GeoGuesser account, and may allow linking a guest profile to that account. See Google's privacy policy and Meta's privacy policy. Connecting an account is optional; guest gameplay remains available.
7. Monetag advertising (planned)
GeoGuesser may display advertisements delivered by Monetag (operated by Propeller Ads Ltd). Depending on the ad format and configuration, advertising partners may process IP addresses, device/browser identifiers, page interactions, cookie or similar identifiers, and ad impression or click information for ad delivery, measurement, frequency management and fraud prevention. See Monetag's website for its current privacy and advertising disclosures. We will update this section with the exact applicable partner policies and purposes before activating Monetag scripts. We do not require players to click advertisements to access normal gameplay.
8. Google AdSense advertising (planned)
GeoGuesser may use Google AdSense to display advertising. Google and its advertising partners may use cookies or similar technologies to deliver, limit, personalize (if permitted), and measure ads. You can learn more in Google's advertising technologies information and Google's privacy policy. Where required, non-essential ad storage and personalized advertising will depend on valid consent. A Google-certified consent management platform integrated with the IAB Transparency and Consent Framework will be configured where required for AdSense in the EEA, UK and Switzerland.
9. Consent and choices
When optional advertising or analytics processing requires consent, you should be offered a meaningful choice before it begins, including a way to refuse and later withdraw consent. Withdrawing consent does not affect the lawfulness of processing that occurred before withdrawal. A consent-management interface must be implemented before optional advertising tags are activated where required.
10. Recipients and international transfers
Information may be processed by the infrastructure hosting GeoGuesser (including Oracle Cloud), Google Maps, and—only when integrated—Google authentication, Meta authentication, Monetag and Google AdSense or their advertising partners. These services may process data outside the European Economic Area. Applicable transfer mechanisms and specific recipients should be verified and documented before activation.
11. Retention and security
Session, gameplay, account, security and support information is retained for as long as needed for the relevant purpose and applicable legal obligations. Before publishing, specify the actual retention schedule for guest sessions, account records, match history, server logs, and backups, as well as the process for account deletion. We use access controls and other reasonable safeguards, but no online service can guarantee absolute security.
12. Your data protection rights
Where applicable, you may request access, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability, or object to certain processing, and withdraw consent. Send requests to abbalint@gmail.com. You may also lodge a complaint with a competent supervisory authority, including the Hungarian National Authority for Data Protection and Freedom of Information (NAIH). Clearing browser cookies can make an unlinked guest identity inaccessible.
13. Children
GeoGuesser is a general-audience geography game. Before enabling social login or targeted advertising, establish and publish an appropriate minimum-age policy and procedures for any required parental consent.
14. Changes and contact
This policy may be updated as the service evolves. Significant changes will be communicated where appropriate.
